American stoneware was the most popular dishware in the 19th century in the US. Produced mostly by potters on the east coast, blue and white spongeware was created for the utilitarian use and remains in good condition today because of its durability.

The color of antique spongeware was made by applying the cobalt oxide to the pottery piece with a natural sponge or rag. Sponges were cut into various sizes and stamped all over a piece or sponged border with a hand painted central design.
