The Yoruba people of Nigeria, West Africa has one of the largest birth rate of twins in the world. In the Yoruba culture, twins are considered to possess special powers as they believe they possess one soul and must be cared for accordingly.
These figures are called ere ibeji - "ere" means sacred image, "ibi" means born and "eji" means two.
Ibeji twins figure is actually two joined figures who are sitting. The legs are drawn up with large bare feet. The torsos are thin. Both figures are wearing a necklace and head piece.
The material is a bronze/brass with extensive pitting. Assuming due to chemicals in improper cleaning.
