Hand Carved African Wood Wedding Chain. Museum Quality. Folk Art. Vintage.
Nice, whimsical Folk Art African Wedding chain whittled from one continuous piece of wood. The wood has a beautiful, varied tone; it is dark in places, and lighter in others, giving it a two-tone appearance at certain points and shows off a soft wood grain.
The ritual is: Upon reaching the marrying age and finding a woman suitable to marry, a man carves a wedding chain. He presents this chain to the tribal chief. This is a sign that he wishes to marry a particular woman. If the chief approves, the wedding is arranged. During the ceremony, the chief would display the chain for all to see, and then present this chain to the couple and proclaim them to be wed.
This African Wedding Chain is a stunning piece of traditional African art. It is hand carved and made from one piece of wood. Uniquely, this has 5 double links and 2 figures that show off a highly skilled artisan created this piece.
This is a large piece that would make a perfect wedding gift and can be used by the bride and groom to symbolize the uniting of two families. And future fertility. It can be displayed in many unique ways. Hang it around a wedding photo of both families. Hang over your bed as a reminder of your unity. Use on a dining table as a centerpiece. Take a photo with this on your anniversary each year to show your love and marriage progression.
